Breeding bird surveys
All wild birds are protected while nesting. If your site has trees, hedges, scrub, farmland or old buildings, the council may ask for a breeding bird survey to find out which species nest there.
Dusk and nocturnal surveys
Some birds are most active at dusk or after dark, so daytime surveys can miss them. We carry out dusk and nocturnal surveys for species such as owls, nightjars and woodcock, using thermal imaging cameras where they help.
What's included
- Several visits spread through the breeding season
- Maps of nest sites and territories
- A report with advice on timing your work and protecting nesting birds
When to book
The breeding season runs from March to August, and the visits need to be spread across it. Book early in the year so none are missed.
If birds are nesting
Work near an active nest usually has to wait until the young have left. Some species, such as barn owls, have extra protection. We'll tell you what this means for your timetable.
