Reptile surveys

Slow worms found during a reptile survey

All UK reptiles are protected. Slow worms, common lizards, grass snakes and adders live on rough grassland, gardens, railway banks and brownfield sites. If your site has this kind of habitat, the council may ask for a reptile survey.

How it works

We lay small mats around the site for reptiles to shelter under, then check them on at least seven visits in suitable weather.

When to book

Surveys run from April to September. The mats need a week or two to settle before the first check, so book early.

If reptiles are found

Most sites can still be developed. We'll plan how to move the reptiles safely to a suitable area before work starts.
